Honoring a Legacy: Biele Albatrosy Named 'Personalities of the Year' by Košice Region
Their workday typically began by briefing flight cadets and ended with high-stakes aerobatic training, where a mere two meters separated their wings. Founded in Košice in the early 1990s, the Biele Albatrosy (White Albatrosses) served as the official ambassadors of the Slovak Air Force. Now, more than two decades after their final landing, comes a prestigious official tribute: the Košice Region is awarding them the "KSK Personality of the Year" title for 2025.
The awards gala traditionally serves as the curtain-raiser for the region’s largest public event, Župné dni (Region Days). For 2025, these top-tier honors will be presented to 11 individuals and two collectives. Every year, the region recognizes the people and teams who have significantly contributed to the development and promotion of Eastern Slovakia, both at home and abroad.
For the Biele Albatrosy, this award honors a legacy that took flight in August 1991. The team made its debut at the World Parachuting Championships, featuring three Aero L-39 Albatros jets painted in the national colors. Under the leadership of Ivan Chvojka, the group eventually expanded to a six-ship formation with a dedicated solo pilot. These were true professionals who spent their mornings drilling cadets at the Košice Air Force Academy and their afternoons representing Slovakia in tight formations at prestigious airshows in Denmark, the UK, France, and Italy.
Their brand of aerobatics was far more than a visual spectacle; it was a masterclass in discipline. Flying at high speeds with just a few meters of separation required the kind of absolute synchronicity that can only be forged through thousands of hours in the air. This uncompromising professionalism shaped generations of subsequent pilots and built the expert reputation of Košice’s aviation heritage.
Although the team’s history officially concluded in April 2004 with the final ferry flight to Sliač Air Base, their legacy in the region remains as strong as ever. This latest award highlights the fact that the Biele Albatrosy remain a cornerstone of Slovak aviation history, continuing to inspire future aviators to this day.
