Legendary giant is back at SIAF 2016!

Four years ago it belonged to the greatest attractions of International Air Fest Days. Flying more than 13 hours from the American base Barksdale, Louisiane it landed at Sliač Airport to offer the incredible experience to be seen at static diplay.

Technical failure shortly before departure caused the cancellation of its participation at SIAF 2015. All its admirers do believe the strategic bomber B-52 will arrive for the International Air Fest Days SIAF 2016.

“During the Global Security Forum GLOBSEC 2016 in Bratislava  Commander of the 307th Operations Support Squadron LtCol Christopher B. Anderson, the chief of NATO Days in Ostrava Zbyňek Pavlačík and representatives of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic entered the negotiations comfirming its participation at Internatonal Air Fest Days 2016 in Sliač“, says Hubert Štoksa Director of MLD SIAF.

In 2012, shortly after landing, the pilot Keith Schultz shared his enthusiasm for participating together with his team in  International Air Fest Days and presenting the part of USA in the heart of Europe. Not only the media and  tens of enthusiasts in the vicinity of Sliač Airport were eager to see  the icon of American Air Forces but also government representatives and former President Ivan Gašparovič did not miss the opportunity to see B-52 Stratofortress.

In the streets of Banská Bystrica fans of aviation took pictures  of American pilots, even they together drank a toast called B-52. Within Sliač Airport during MLD SIAF 2012 the crew of B-52  occupied themselves showing  the cabin of this mighty aircraft to aviation lovers and  answering all their questions.

Bomber B-52 - “BUFF“ - BIG UGLY FAT FELLOW

B-52 is a long-range heavy strategic bomber  that can perform a variety of missions. It is capable of flying at high subsonic speeds at altitude more than 15000 m. Its original task was nuclear threatening suported with its flying range and sufficient loading capacity. It can carry also a wide array of  conventional weapons – up to 32 tons.

The legendary American bomber is almost 49 m long and the  wingspan is more than 56 m. The strategic bomber Boeing B-52 Stratofortress was designed for bombing targets within  the territory of the USSR from high altitudes. It was meant to replace the aircraft Consolidated B-36 Peacemaker. The first prototype B 52A took off for the first time in 1954, its second version went into the service in 1955 and B-52H was delivered in October 1962. In the 1990s they were deployed in several missions, such as  Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. During Desert Storm B-52s delivered 40% of all the weapons dropped by coallition forces. A total of  744 B-52s were built.  

On 16 February 1991 seven aircraft of B-52G from the 2nd Bomb Wing took off from Barksdale AFB in Louisiane (USA) carrying 39 conventional cruise  missiles (AGM -86C) to strike targets in the territory of Iraq. All seven aircraft landed after 35-hour flight at their home base at Barksdale. At that time this was the longest distance flown for a combat mission.
